256. Thomas HOAD was born on 7 Feb 1636 in Rudgwick Sussex.⁽²⁰⁴⁾ He was buried on 4 Oct 1725 in Rudgwick Sussex. ⁽²⁰⁵⁾ It would seem that Thomas is left one shilling in the the Will of his sister Judith, who married Thomas NYE of Billingshurst - the same amount being left by her to her brother John HOAD of Warnham. He was married to Bridget GARTON on 13 Oct 1667 in Rudgwick Sussex.⁽²⁰⁶⁾

257. Bridget GARTON was born about 1640 in Rudgwick Sussex.⁽²⁰⁷⁾ She died in 1730 in Horsham Sussex.⁽²⁰⁸⁾ Bridget's Will came to light after I had re-checked the listing sent me from the West Sussex Record Office, and discovered it there under Horsham. I had been unable to find a Will for Thomas, and still have not done so at August 2003. It cleared up the mystery of the late baptisms of Richard and Philip, whom I had always suspected to be the sons of Thomas and Bridget but who, due to their adult age at baptism, had not been entered in the register as sons of anyone! It does not clear up the mystery of why they were late baptisms at all, expecially considering that Thomas was a respected churchgoer, perhaps there was a falling out between him and his Church? Other children in the family were baptised as normal. She was also obviously in the know as to some flaw in the character of her grandson William Parsons, viz: the clause relating to the £30. An astute lady, one would have to say!. HOAD BRIDGETT. IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN.I Bridgett Hoad of Horsham in the County of Sussex widow being in years & indisposed in bodily health but of sound & disposing mind memory & understanding praise be given to the Lord for the same Therefore doe make Ordaine declare and appoint this to be my last Will & Testament in manner & forme following hereby revoking & making void all former Wills w[ha]tsoever by me at any time heretofore made first & principally I comend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God the giver therof hoping in & through the meritts death & passion of my blessed Saviour Jesus Christ to obtain free pardon, forgiveness of all my Sins & Everlasting Life And my Body I desire to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named And as to the Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I being minded to dispose thereof so as no Difference may arise about the same after my decease I do will Give devise bequeath & dispose thereof as followeth Imprimis I give & bequeath unto my Son John Hoad one pair of Chest of Drawers one pair of Tyre Sheets & one pair of pillow coates to be delivered unto him within three months after my decease by my Executor hereafter named. Item I give and bequeath unto my Son Philip Hoad All the Rest & Residue of my Household Goods whatsoever to be delivered unto him by my Executor hereafter named within Three Months after my decease Item I give & devise unto my Son Richard Hoad & to his Heires Executors Ad[judica]tors & Assignes for Ever

All that my new erected Messuage or Tenement, Garden Hocherds & p[re]m[is]es with the Apptnces thereunto belonging lately purchased of & from one Thomas Rowland Solomon Hampshire & Jane Rowland Widow theretofore called part of Arnolds House & then by the name of the Six Bells Scituate standing lying & being in a certain place commonly called the West Street or Bishoprick within the parish of Horsham aforesaid & now in my own occupacon To hold unto my said son Richard Hoad & to his Heires & Assignes for evermore Subject & lyable Nevertheless to & Chargeable with the payment of the several Legacies & Summes of money hereafter in & by this my last Will & Testament by me given & bequeathed. Item I give and bequeath unto my aforesaid Sons John Hoad & Philip hoad the sum of Ten pounds apiece of lawfull money of Great Britaine to be paid unto them & each of them out of the aforesaid Messuage or Tenement & premises by my said Son Richard Hoad his heires or Assignes within Three Months after my decease but in case either of my said Sons John Hoad & Philip Hoad shall happen to dye before the same shall become payable That then the Legacy of him so dying shall descend & come unto & be paid to the survivor of them Item I give & bequeath unto my Great Grand - daughter Sarah Hoad daughter of my late Grandson Thomas Hoad the sum of five pounds of like lawfull money of Great Britaine to be paid unto her by my aforesaid Son Richard Hoad his Heires or Assignes out of the aforesaid Messuage or Tenement & premises at her Age of One & Twenty Years or Day of Marriage which shall first happen but in case she shall happen to dye before the same shall become due & payable as aforesaid that then the same shall come unto my Executor hereafter named Item I give and bequeath unto my Son in Law John Downer for Life the use of Ten pounds at Five per Cent during the Terme of his Natural Life and from & imediately after his decease I give & bequeath the said principal sum of Ten pounds unto all the Children of my late daughter Judith Downer Wife of my aforesaid Son in Law John Downer which shall be then living born of her Body equally betweene them share & share alike the same to be paid by my aforesaid Son Richard Hoad out of the aforesaid Messuage or Tenement & premises Item I give & bequeath unto my Grandson William Parsons the sum of Thirty pounds of like lawfull money of Great Britaine to be paid unto him out the aforesaid Messuage or Tenement & premises by my aforesaid Son Richard Hoad at his Age of One & Twenty Years but in Case my said Grandson shall happen to dye before the same shall become due & payable as aforesaid That then the same shall descend & come unto my executor hereafter named or in Case my said Grandson William Parsons shall at any time hereafter raise treate or Comence any dispute or Law Suite in about for or concerning the Messuage or Tenement & premises before herein by me given & devised That then the said Legacy of Thirty pounds herein before by [me] given & bequeathed shall cease be null & void as if I had never herein given the same And Lastly I do make ordaine & appoint my said son Richard Hoad Sole Executor of this my last Will & Testament unto whom I do give devise & bequeath all the rest & residue of my real & personal whatsoever after my debts Legacies & Funeral Expenses shall be fully paid & discharged In Testimoney Where of I the said Bridgett Hoad the testator have to this my last Will & Testament contained in Three Sheets of paper affyxed with a Seal at the top thereof sett my hand & Seal to each Sheet of paper this One & Thirtith Day of May in the year of our Lord Christ One Thousand Seven Hundred Twenty & Eight: - The mark & Seal of Bridgett Hoad - hoc sigille - signed sealed published & declared by the said Bridgett Hoad the Testatrix as & for her last Will & Testament in the presence of the said Testatrix The mark of Elizabeth Banister :- Thomas Carpenter Jun: - Jon: Coe: -

This Will was initially transcribed by me from the photocopy of the original, and then checked and corrected by Dr Alan Dilnot of Monash University, Victoria to whom my very grateful thanks. Children were:

i. Bridget HOAD was born on 9 Aug 1668 in Rudgwick Sussex. ⁽²⁰⁹⁾
ii. Thomas HOAD was born on 17 Mar 1670 in Rudgwick Sussex. ⁽²¹⁰⁾ He was buried on 24 Jan 1706 in Rudgwick Sussex. ⁽²¹¹⁾
iii. John HOAD was born on 5 May 1672 in Rudgwick Sussex. ⁽²¹²⁾ He was buried on 28 Feb 1751 in Rudgwick Sussex. ⁽²¹³⁾ John's memorial inscription reads " In memory of John Hoad of Ridgwick who died February ye 5th 1750 aged 78.
The memorial for his brother Richard is inscribed on the reverse of this stone.
128 iv. Richard HOAD.
v. Philip HOAD was born in 1688 in Rudgwick Sussex. ⁽²¹⁴⁾ This year is assigned to him due to his age at Baptism in 1711 of 23 years, therefore he was born sometime around 1688. He was baptized on 23 Sep 1711 in Rudgwick Sussex.⁽²⁹⁾ The Parish Register gives his age at baptism as 23 years but does not identify his parents. I was able to assign him to his proper place in the family after receipt and transcription of his mother's will written in 1728 and probated in 1730.
